Today, on World Kidney Day, we come together to shed light on the importance of kidney health and the challenges faced by individuals affected by kidney disease. In this special edition of our newsletter, we delve into research and initiatives aimed at addressing the growing burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) globally and in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Understanding kidney disease statistics

The Kidney Disease Statistics blog provides valuable insights into the prevalence and impact of kidney disease worldwide. With an estimated global CKD prevalence of 11%–13% and a staggering 15% of US adults affected, the urgency to address this health crisis becomes paramount. Seeking information about kidney health and highlighting the importance of proactive screening and awareness (Modglin, 2024).

Escalating burden of CKD

Recent literature highlights the alarming prevalence of CKD, particularly in developed countries like the United States and the United Kingdom.

With estimates showing that 15% of US adults have CKD, there is an urgent need for proactive screening, especially among high-risk populations.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including the UAE, are not immune to the CKD epidemic, as rising rates of obesity, diabetes mellitus (DM), and hypertension contribute to its increasing prevalence. In the UAE, where diabetes prevalence is among the highest globally, the urgency to address CKD is even more pronounced (Al Madani et al., 2024).

Initiatives in the UAE and global collaboration

The literature underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts to address the escalating burden of CKD, both locally and globally. Initiatives such as the SEHA (Abu Dhabi Health Services Co.) study provide valuable insights into CKD prevalence in the UAE, guiding targeted interventions to curb its progression. Additionally, global collaboration, as highlighted in a recent webinar by SEHA Kidney Care (SKC), plays a crucial role in advancing kidney care practices and improving outcomes for individuals with CKD (SEHA, 2024). SEHA Kidney Care (SKC) hosted a webinar titled ‘Paired Kidney Donation from Theory to Implementation,’ bringing together over 1,800 experts from 32 countries. Discussions centered on improving options for CKD patients, kidney transplantation, and the importance of international collaboration in advancing kidney care practices (SEHA).

Challenges and strategies for prevention

The literature surrounding kidney disease in the UAE highlights the significant impact of diabetes and hypertension on CKD prevalence. Early detection and preventive measures are essential, as late diagnosis often leads to the need for dialysis as a last resort. Health screenings and lifestyle modifications are crucial for reducing the burden of kidney disease in our communities (Zain, 2017).

On this World Kidney Day, let us renew our commitment to raising awareness, promoting early detection, and supporting individuals affected by kidney disease. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against CKD.
